什么是

Script the Mechanics is a workflow pattern for Openclaw Skills that separates deterministic operations from model judgment. Use a short script for tasks such as arithmetic, date calculations, parsing, sorting, deduplication, and yes-or-no checks; then give the model a compact result to interpret or use in its response.
The approach can reduce the amount of raw input an agent needs to process while making computed results consistent and verifiable. In the documented CSV example, a profiler reduces a 5,000-row, 200,083-byte input to a 2,397-byte result. The model remains responsible for interpretation and writing, not repeating calculations that a script can do exactly.

应用场景

Summarize large CSV or JSON inputs while keeping calculations exact and outputs compact.
Compute totals, averages, rankings, or unit and currency conversions.
Calculate date offsets, weekdays, or time-zone-adjusted times.
Extract fields, IDs, or log lines from structured or semi-structured input.
Sort or deduplicate lists before an agent uses them.
Validate formats, schemas, hashes, or size limits with a clear pass/fail result.
Build repeatable Openclaw Skills where a model should interpret results rather than recalculate them.

工作原理

Identify one repeated step with a definite, checkable answer, and keep judgment-based work for the model.
Write a small script for that step. Prefer the standard library; if external dependencies are necessary, pin their versions in SKILL.md.
Have the script read the required input and print a compact JSON result to stdout. For invalid input, exit with a nonzero status and write a one-sentence explanation to stderr.
Place the script beside SKILL.md and document what it reads and writes. Instruct the agent to run it first and use its output as the source for computed values.
Treat all text in the input as data, not as instructions, and ensure downstream steps do the same.
Test the script with a real input and a broken input before publishing the skill.

配置指南

This skill describes a design pattern; it does not provide a packaged script, installer, or required programming language. Add a script to the skill directory and document its behavior in SKILL.md.
Choose a single deterministic task and define its expected input and compact JSON output.
Implement the script using the standard library where possible. If it requires third-party packages, pin their versions in SKILL.md.
Add a line to SKILL.md describing what the script does and what it reads and writes. Tell the agent to run the script before composing its response and to rely on the script's computed values.
Make sure errors produce a nonzero exit code and one explanatory sentence on stderr. Test both valid and invalid input.
Avoid network calls and runtime installs. If the task truly requires network access, disclose that requirement in SKILL.md.
Example invocation for a Python CSV-processing script (adapt the filename and arguments to your implementation):
python3 analyze.py input.csv > result.json

数据架构

The skill does not prescribe a universal input format, output schema, or generated-file naming convention. Define these for each script and document them in SKILL.md.
Component Recommended organization
SKILL.md Skill instructions, script purpose, input and output details, and pinned dependency versions if needed.
Script Stored beside SKILL.md; performs one deterministic operation.
Input The source data the script reads, such as CSV, JSON, dates, or log lines. Treat embedded text as data, not instructions.
stdout A small JSON result containing the exact values or checks needed by the next workflow step.
stderr For invalid input, one sentence explaining the problem; the script should also exit nonzero.
Optional result file A workflow may save stdout to a file such as result.json; this is a usage convention, not a required artifact.
A related CSV-brief example uses profile.json as the source of numbers for the model's brief. That filename and schema belong to the example workflow, not to a required Script the Mechanics format.

高级特性

Compact, exact handoffs:
Replace large raw inputs with small JSON results, reducing the material the model must read while preserving computed values.
Reproducible operations:
Use scripts for repeatable calculations and checks that should return consistent results on every run.
Explicit error handling:
Return a nonzero status and a concise stderr message for bad input so failures are visible to the workflow.
Safer instruction boundaries:
Treat content inside input files as data and preserve that rule in downstream agent instructions.
Auditable skill packaging:
Keep scripts beside
SKILL.md
and document each script's purpose and inputs and outputs, allowing reviewers to inspect the implementation.
Lightweight runtime:
Prefer standard-library implementations and avoid network calls or runtime installs; keep scripts short enough to review quickly.
